If the 90 degree heat didn’t put a damper on concert-goers’ spirits, then maybe the sporadic downpours at every major outdoor tour might have. Whether it was standing in line outside of concert venue Revolution or being outdoors for Warped Tour, it was definitely a poncho-wearing season.Even though ponchos were being sold like bottled water, the summer concert season went well. Many great bands came to the area and will soon return to enlighten us with their presence; hopefully this time they will forget the rain clouds.
Taking Back SundayProjekt Revolution, housing great bands such as Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance and Taking Back Sunday, turned out to be a rainy sweat-fest like all the rest of the summer shows. The storms came around 1 p.m., and the fans had to deal with stinky, soaked clothes until Linkin Park’s final notes at 11 p.m. Yet, thanks to the great lineup, anyone at the show would tell you that it was worth it ; there was someone for everyone.
Street Drum CorpsWarped Tour – featuring Street Drum Corps – started off with sweaty fans waiting countless hours for the gates to open. Then, after a few random rain showers, came a massive wind, sand and rain storm. While the majority of the fans went to seek shelter, others stuck it out and hid under tents on the verge of being blown away. But, the show must go on. About an hour after Street Drum Corps’ set was cut short by the storm, the music started again and clear skies prevailed.
The FormatThough not a major tour this summer, fans filled the Revolution in Fort Lauderdale to see The Format. Opening act The Honorary Title put on a heartfelt show and even had to ask the audience to “shut up” in order to finish a track. Let’s just say I can’t wait for their headlining tour to come.
Goo Goo DollsThe Goo Goo Dolls came back to their usual South Florida stage at Sound Advice Amphitheatre. They have played this venue ever since their album “Black Balloon” came out in the late ’90s. And it’s not like the crowds got any smaller over the years – they only became more diverse. The young and old came out to catch a glimpse of front man Johnny Rzeznik, who hasn’t changed a bit since the music video release of “Iris” in 1998. The Goo Goo Dolls are a band that will definitely transcend time. If you missed them, the band will probably be back at Sound Advice in another two years.
