For the first time in Florida Atlantic University’s history, the constitution calls for a legislative election in the fall. Some say the new SG constitution makes the system look more like the national system, with midterm elections offset from the executive elections. However, the amount of votes in the last national midterm election were 15 percent less than for the presidential election in 2004 and 2006, respectively. As the university campus is a microcosm of the nation, can we expect the same low voter turnout at the SG legislative elections September 18 and 19?Student Affairs hopes not.Vice President of Student Affairs Charles Brown says, “We were doing this [legislative election] in the hopes to get more participation from our student body.””We hope to get the voter turnouts we got in the past Student Government elections,” Associate Dean of Student Affairs Terry Mena says. “If we get more than the normal turnout, that’s even better.”However, in the spring elections, a very low percentage of students voted for the president or vice president, let alone in the legislative elections. Approximately six percent of the student body voted in the presidential election, and as little as 221 students voting on the Treasure Coast, MacArthur and Broward Campuses in gubernatorial and legislative races, according to the SGA Web site.”The democratic process is the foundation of our institution as a university and that’s why its so important for kids to get out there and vote,” Election Supervisor Adam Ferrando, a political science graduate student, says.According to Ferrando, whether or not more students come out to vote won’t be known until the unofficial results are released, which will be the morning after the elections on September 20 at the earliest.”I hope students vote, I hope they participate in the process, and I really hope we get a wide variety of students in the SGA,” Brown says. “There are real concerns that I hope SGA starts to address.”
