Co…Cou…Courage? It may take a little to get out there and participate in all that the FAU sports scene has to offer. Whether you just like to lift weights or run on a treadmill, participate in competitive sports, toss around a football or a frisbee or get loud and crazy with Owl pride, FAU has it all…so don’t be a coward, get out there!
How does FAU Sports stack up?You can watch the Owls as they compete at the highest level of NCAA athletics as members of the Sun Belt Conference. Witness former Miami Heat player Rex Walters as he coaches the basketball team at the newly renovated FAU Arena, right on campus. The baseball and softball teams also compete in beautiful facilities that are walking distance from the dorms. FAU track and field will be competing at their all new complex adjacent to FAU’s Arena. All in all, FAU competes in 19 NCAA sanctioned sports. Of course, that includes legendary Coach Howard Schnellenberger and his football team as they take the field against some of the top teams in the nation. Mark your calendar: the Owls open the football season at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Sept. 1, against conference opponent Middle Tennessee, and FAU takes on UF at “The Swamp” on Nov. 17.
And don’t worry about FAU being able to compete at the NCAA Division I level. The Owls field perennially strong teams in swimming, baseball, softball, volleyball and soccer. The basketball and football teams offer some of the most exciting sports action in South Florida. You won’t have to muster much courage to linger on campus after class or stroll over from the dorms to see some electrifying sports action on the Boca Raton campus.

Not that athletic? It’s okay; FAU has Intramural and Club Sports tooIn addition to watching FAU’s best athletes compete on an interscholastic level, the rest of us can also get in on the action. Intramural sports are a great way for new students to get involved.
The Department of Campus Recreation offers schedules for a wide array of intramural sports. Last year intramural sports included everything from basketball to table tennis. Students can sign up as a team or a free agent to be picked up by a team.
There are also a number of sports clubs at FAU (see complete list below) that are open to the entire student body. The most notable club in recent years has been the Men’s Rugby Club. Rugby competes interscholastically but is not sanctioned by the NCAA, so any student can play. This past season the team went undefeated against competition from around the country. FAU club sports are open to students of all abilities that are interested in staying active.
