By spring of 2008, FAU Davie students will have a new place on campus to call home, the Student Union Building.
While there are other facilities on campus that are beneficial to students, the Student Union Building will be more like a second home rather than just another building. Well, before anyone gets carried away with this analogy of a “second home,” I’ll let you be the judge.
The first floor of the Student Union will have everything from a student lounge to a Barnes & Noble. If the first floor isn’t satisfying, you can go to the second floor which houses all your academic needs: Student Government, the Owl Card office and a health center. So, does it sound like a home yet?
“Everyone has worked together and has been apart of having the same vision to improve the student life on Davie campus,” said Marion Merzer, associate dean of student affairs at FAU Davie campus. “Administration really wanted to help students’ dreams come true,” continued Merzer.
The Student Health Center is the most anticipated area of the SU that is coming to Davie. Prior to the new Health Center, the campus had to outsource its clinic services from FAU Boca Raton campus and NSU, located west of FAU Davie campus. Now students will have the comfort of going to the clinic located right on campus.
Another part of the SU that intrigues Davie students and workers is the multipurpose room.
“It’s exciting for me that we finally have space to gather, to meet and to party,” said Dr. Joyanne Stephens, Broward Campus Vice President. “We never had a place to hold events, only outside.”
Along with the Student Union development, the campus has plans for future developments from the empty space that will be provided once everything moves. Dr. Stephens hopes to relocate the student support services for new students, such as admissions and registration, to the first floor of the Liberal Arts Building where Student Government and the Cafe was located.
The Student Union building has been thought out for about six years, and now FAU Davie students will finally benefit from this development in spring of 2008.
“The Student Union development is taking a lot of effort and scarifies,” said Priscilla Velazquez, Broward campuses governor. “It will be beneficial for students now as well as in the long run.”
