The Davie campus began construction of a new Student Union in November.
The two-story building is being constructed on the northwest side of the Liberal Arts building and will include a new Barnes & Noble, a cafí©, a Bank Atlantic office, a student lounge and computer study rooms. Office and meeting space for Student Government and Davie campus clubs and agencies will also be available.
In addition, the building will house a health suite with an on-duty nurse practitioner and all the amenities of a working medical health facility.
According to Terry Mena, associate director of student development and chair of the Davie campus building and planning committee, the facility is being financed by the state CITF (Capital Improvement Trust Fund) which uses money provided from fee collections and the sale of bonds. Florida statutes require the CITF to be allocated to public universities every three years.
“It took six years to collect the money needed for this project, but we are so happy and excited,” said Broward Associate Dean of Students Marion Merzer. “The students on the Davie campus will now have a home.”
Construction of the Davie Student Union is expected to be complete on Dec. 5, 2007.
