If you haven’t noticed already, the Boca campus University Center is sporting a new look. With fresh paint, glistening tile floors, a new logo shop and a new restaurant, the UC staff hopes to make this campus hangout the place to be. That’s why the Center’s new slogan is, “Make it your space.” They want it to be your space to meet, eat, shop and play.
“We are trying to get students more involved and bring them to the space,” UC Director Brain Keintz said. “We are trying to provide a convenient location for students to spend their time.”
Celebrating the new semester, the UC is hosting an open house to showcase its new amenities. The celebration began Wednesday in the new Owl Wear Logo Shop and continues all week.
Today ( Jan. 18) the UC’s new restaurant Coyote Jack’s will be celebrating its grand opening with live entertainment and free food and drinks until 6 p.m. The southwest-inspired Jack’s takes the location of Wackadoo’s and houses 12 flat screens with Direct TV, billiard tables, darts and air hockey.
The week’s main event, the UC Games Tournament, begins Friday Jan. 19 at noon. Students will have the opportunity to compete in a variety of games including billiards, darts, video game challenge and Texas Hold’em. The event will take place in the UC lobby and Coyote Jack’s, and games will continue until 9 p.m. Prizes for winners include an iPod, a TV, video games and Owl Bucks food credits.
The final event, Carnivowl, will take place Friday night at 9 p.m. Sponsored by The Program Board,” this spring tradition will feature music, food and more games honoring the new semester until 1 a.m.
Although this celebration only lasts a week, UC renovations will continue on to next semester.
“The beginning changes are to make the space softer and more comfortable,” Keintz said. “We have a few more works in progress.”
Some of these works are a billiard and foosball table, as well as an event-planning center. The center, which will open next month, will handle reservations, housing and food arrangements for planning meetings and events.
Another upcoming change is the name of the University Center itself. If things go as planned, the space will be called the Student Union. Although the name change has been approved, Keintz says the official title will not go into effect until all campus signs and marketing materials are updated.
