New Student Body President Austin Shaw’s Address to the Student Body
Dear Student Body,
In the wake of the recent events surrounding the Student Government Association, I feel you deserve a clear outline of my perspective on the matter. It is important that I preface this with a few general comments. Foremost, we must not allow the disappointing actions of a few to disparage the character of the majority. Furthermore, many successful events have taken place in recent days, and Student Government will continue to provide services for the students in the future. On Saturday, November 11, there will be a tailgate from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and Diversity Week will commence November 13, culminating with the Sundance Festival on Thursday, November 16.
Regarding the recent resignation of SGA’s previous president, it should be noted that I had no definitive knowledge of former President Murray’s actions surrounding the book voucher program. I have been embarrassed and let down as well. At present, I still do not have any of the facts regarding his participation in this program. I was simply presented with a resignation like the rest of the student body. Under my administration, I will not tolerate lying, cheating, or any other type of unethical and secretive behavior. Rather, I will move forward with the difficult task of transforming the image of SGA to a humble and respectful group of dedicated leaders.
My agenda includes specific actions that will demonstrate my concern for the current status of SGA and the student body. I look forward to working closely with Dr. Brown and the entire Student Affairs Division to re-construct SGA. I also intend to team-up with the student body and graciously ask their assistance in rewriting the constitution and forming a new SGA in which the students of this great university may take pride. My door is always open and I encourage you to notify me of your ideas.
Respectfully,
Austin ShawStudent Body [email protected]

BOCA RATON, FL (November 16, 2006) – DIVERSITY WEEK grand finale – Sundance Festival is today, at 5 – 11PM at the Heritage Park Tower’s Lawn (by the dorms). It celebrates the diverse student population at Florida Atlantic University. Student Government will have ethnic food, performances, cultural diversity, dances, and musical guests.
MacArthur Campus – On October 31st, Program Board’s Halloween Ball proved to be a great success. Many students, both commuters and residential, plowed into the Abacoa Golf Club as doors opened last Tuesday. The Costume Ball had much to offer; some came adorned in elaborate costumes in hopes of winning the costume contest, and others came equally decked out just looking to have some festive fun on Halloween Night. The prizes, dessert food, music and friends all contributed to a successful night.
Moreover, November 1st & 2nd were sign ups for the upcoming Bush Gardens Trip. All 100 spots were filled in a matter of hours by students eagerly waiting to take advantage of the programs offered by Student Government through their Activity and Service Fees. The trip will be taking place on Sunday, November 12th. Breakfast will be served at 6:30AM; the busses will leave at 7:00AM.
On Saturday, November 4th, SAVI joined the United Way in a Native Plant Planting. Students arrived eager to give back to the environment by helping native plants stand a chance against the invasive plants that are taking over.
Furthermore, November 6th – 17th, SAVI is teaming up with Publix and Food for Families to run a Thanksgiving Food Drive on campus. Drop boxes have been set up all over campus for non-perishable food items to be donated.
