To the FAU Student Body:
We are all shocked and saddened by the tragedy that took place on the Boca Raton campus last week. The loss of life under any circumstances is heartbreaking, particularly when those involved are young with so much to look forward to in their lives. The entire FAU family is grieving with the parents and friends of those who died.
Young adults are called upon to make choices every day. One goal of the university experience is to help students make choices that will enhance their lives by strengthening their critical thinking abilities. A tragedy such as the one we’ve just experienced underscores the importance of making good decisions about your lifestyle. If you need help in dealing with an alcohol or drug problem, or if you know someonewho needs help, or if you simply want to educate yourself about these substances, please get in touch with FAU’s Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention and Research Office.
A free lunch and learn session titled “Drug Trends in South Florida” will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at noon in the Queen Palm Room of the University Center. Dr. Jim Hall, director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Substance Abuse at Nova Southeastern University, will discuss drug use and misuse in our area and how it is affecting students. If you would like to attend, please call 561-297-3615. Also note, if you’d like to speak with someone about your feelings in the wake of this terrible event, please remember that help remainsavailable to you through the Student Counseling Center.
Remember that your life is precious not only to you, but also to all the people who love you. I hope you’ll always handle it with care.
Sincerely,
Frank T. Brogan ’81
President
