Abortion, yes I said it, Abortion. That dirty little word that is whispered and rarely talked about among college students. Even if you don’t have a vagina, this is a topic that shouldn’t be kept silent.
There are certain things people don’t like to bring up in conversation, abortion being one of them. It’s almost certain one would be judged just by taking a side {and it’s definitely certain many people already dislike me so I don’t mind voicing my opinion}. So let me get this out of the way, do I think Abortions should be legal? Yes. Would I ever have one done? No. Confused? Just because I would never have one done doesn’t mean I’m going to tell another woman what to do with her body, because it is not my body, and I am not perfect, nor am I God to say what is right from wrong.
I’m not alone, junior Vicki Ringle, who is a part of ‘Catholic Newman Center,’ Catholicism group here on FAU’s campus, has mixed feelings on the subject. “I’ve never been pushed to make a decision {by the group}; I just haven’t decided one way or another. On some parts I agree but regardless what decision I make, it won’t hurt my faith.”
I say why does the government get to decide what should or should not happen to a women’s body? I don’t see them regulating on how much a guy can jerk off, killing “potential children” which numerous religions are anti-masturbation. So why doesn’t the government step in, why is it they only control women’s bodies? The government has no problem killing their citizens with the death penalty, but some guy from the backwoods of Texas who cant even pronounce a full sentence is going to tell me how to regulate my body, when he doesn’t even have a vagina? A man should not even have the option of making a law over a women’s body. It should be women deciding weather to make it legal or not, not men.
Wanting a man’s opinion, I talked to Wilkine Brutus a junior, who said, “It should be equal people choosing to make it legal or not, of all ethnicities and background, half men, half women. Plus you gotta think about rape cases, incest and stuff.”
He makes a good point. What about rape? Incest? Health of the mother? Life isn’t so black and white, there’s so much grey. So to completely illegalize something would be unquestionably wrong. Think about it, what if when you got older, you’re little innocent child was raped? Or you’re wife was going to die? I think it’s very easy for someone to sit there and say “Oh no I’d never have an abortion or be with someone who has,” but to really be in that situation, to really face it head on, I think its funny how quickly someone’s beliefs fly out the window
Obviously this is not something that can be solved overnight but it is time people stop being afraid of it touchy matter, its time for women to talk about it. To take a stand no matter what side it’s on because as of now, it’s a man telling you what to do with you’ve body and for to many women it seems like that okay with them.
