Fort Lauderdale-FAU has played some tough teams so far this season, but may have found that the toughest team to score on is Sun Belt Conference foe Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns. In front of 9,827 at Lockhart Stadium and a national audience crowd on ESPN2, the Owls’ offense failed to score for a whole game – the second time this season (Kansas State blanked FAU 45-0 on September 9). The Ragin’ Cajuns were able to get two field goals off of the Owls to make the final score 6-0.
The Ragin’ Cajuns were able to capitalize after FAU failed to challenge an interception by Louisiana-Lafayette’s defense in the first quarter.
The ball clearly hit the ground, but in a decision known only by God himself, FAU Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger failed to use one of his two replay challenges in the game on the play.
“On that play it’s the referee’s decision,” Schnellenberger said.
Although the final tally showed a shutout, FAU had two chances to score during the game. With 4:56 left in the third quarter, kicker Warley Leroy had a 41-yard field goal blocked. Then with two seconds left in the game and a chance to win on a touchdown pass, a ULL defender knocked down a game-winning pass thrown by quarterback Rusty Smith to Frantz Simeon.
The Owls are next slated to play their homecoming game against defending Sun Belt champions Arkansas State at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m.
