The future royalty of FAU, wearing their corsages and boutonnieres, walk down the red carpet onto the football field. Waiting to hear their names called, they stand among other candidates hoping to be crowned Homecoming king and queen.
So how do they get there?
Students at FAU who wish to become part of the Homecoming court have quite a process to go through. It begins during the first week of September, when students who want to run for Homecoming king and queen must first contact the Homecoming office to obtain an application.
The application, “an achievement page,” as Homecoming court Coordinator James White puts it, is put on the Homecoming Web site so students can “see which candidates they want to vote as their campus prince and princess.”
Since FAU has multiple campuses, running for Homecoming court is not quite a walk in the park. In fact, the voting and campaigning process is quite strenuous. Four campuses have candidates competing for the title of prince and princess: Boca Raton, Broward,
MacArthur and Treasure Coast. There is no restriction on how many people can run, but students must first run for prince and princess of their main campus in order to be considered for Homecoming king and queen.
Students had three days to log on to the FAU Homecoming Web site and vote for the prince and princess of each campus. As of the voting deadline, 22 candidates between the four campuses were competing for the title.
After the announcement of the winners from each campus, the court is put through an interview process. The interviewers are a part of a committee made up of three alumni, four students (one from each campus) and one faculty member.
The eight winning princes and princesses, two from each of the four campuses, make up the final Homecoming court from which the king and queen are selected.
White says the committee, not the student body, chooses the king and queen based on their individual interviews.
The only chance students get to vote for their desired candidates is when they are voting for prince and princess of their campuses. The king and queen are announced during the Homecoming football game.
