Did MTV invade the campus or the University Center? I really couldn’t tell. All week they were building the stage in the outdoor area behind the University Center, but they didn’t even use it. I walked around campus for about an hour to only find that any or all of the attention was in the University Center.
It was raining though the previous night and that morning, I’ll give them that. But, a little rain never hurt anybody.
I was fortunate enough to walk into “MTV’s Village” which was located in the Grand Palm Room across from Wackadoos they had some decent music playing and about eight booths set up encouraging students to try out or test their product. Herbal Essences, Nintendo, Ford, and a few others were there too. Wrigley’s was even taking pictures of students and putting their pictures on a Wrigley’s t-shirt for free. Talk about branding. “The Village” did not impress me at all. And to say the best, they were lucky to have gotten 1000 students all day.
Again though, it was raining, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt they had to make a few quick changes. But even then, was this all supposed to take place originally by the outdoor stage, or was FAU going to be invaded in its entirety. If I had to make an assumption, I’d guess they only planned to have activities by the outdoor stage.
Around 4 p.m. is when the weather started to become beautiful. I managed to talk to someone from MTV who were collaborating to run this event only to find out that the concert was going to be inside. What a drag.
I don’t know whose call that was, but that was a big disappointment to me. How long could it possibly take to set up a concert? How many flashy lights and other unnecessary functioning distractions do you need during a concert? Sometimes it’s better to just expect the worst then to be hopeful. You don’t want to disappoint yourself, because that’s exactly what happened to me.
I had bought tickets to go to the concert to enjoy it with a few of my friends. I’ve got the Muse CD in my car, and I do enjoy listening to them in my car. They seemed like they could be a good live band. Well, I was wrong.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, I wasn’t paying any attention to the opening band, so I can’t judge them. After they played, and what seemed like an eternity of setting up, Razorlight stepped onto the stage and put on a good show. They were probably the best band of the night. After Razorlight and what seemed like an eternity and a half of setting up, Muse eventually stepped onto the stage.
Overall, I’d give Muse a C- at best. They did nothing spectacular or unique. The lead singer’s guitar and piano drowned out his voice for most of the show. Don’t forget to mention most of their songs sounded the same live. Aside from the humungous balloons filled with confetti, and the lead singer popping them with the end of his guitar, I can’t say I thoroughly enjoyed the concert. A side from singing, the lead singer didn’t speak in between songs. The audience wasn’t as revved up as they could have been.
MTV’s University Center Invasion didn’t impress me at all. Sure, the rain may have caused a few delays, but it rained during Woodstock and I heard Woodstock was still good. I don’t know whether I should place blame on MTV or the SG Program Board, but their invasion was pathetic. All I could say is, I wasted my day.
