FAU women’s golf put up a strong showing last week at the El Diablo Intercollegiate held at Ocala, Florida. The Owls cracked the top ten on March 22, finishing ninth on the tourney with the help of June Bolme. Bolme established a career best score of 73 in the first round and settled into second place early. The freshman from Oslo, Norway was the top finisher for the Owls overall, tying for ninth place and leading the team with a score of 233. FAU completed the first round with an impressive total team score of 319, despite a nagging rain that interrupted play in the second round. Senior Jessica Carafiello finished with a 236 tying for fifteenth place and not far behind Bolme. In addition, senior Paige Maltby shot a respectable 955. Coastal Carolina took the tourney with a combined score of 908. Next up for the Owls is the three-day Ryder Florida Collegiate Championship at Miami starting on April 1.
As for the men, they too headed to Ocala last weekend for the El Diablo Intercollegiate and put up a modest effort against some of the country’s best squads. On March 19, the Owls struggled in the first two rounds shooting a combined 633. Even with the slow start, FAU was out of the top 10 by only 17 shots at the day’s end. Freshman Joong Jo and Marco Morales (78 and 77 scores, respectively) were among the few able to break 80 on Saturday. On March 20, the team wrapped up the tourney finishing fifteenth but the Owls put up some decent individual scores nevertheless. Sophomore and Boca Raton native Ben Gardner had the best individual showing on the weekend, shooting a solid 72 in a single round and emerging as the leader for the Owls, finishing in a tied position at 47th place. Sophomore Tommy Suri shot the lowest round on the afternoon, with a 75 in the third round, giving him a tie for 57th overall. Oklahoma City came out on top taking the tournament with a combined score of 896. The Owls will head to Nashville, Tennessee on April 4 for the two-day Belmont Invitational.
