OWL PROWL
Homecoming 2004 will be remembered as less of a dance and more of an action packed week. Homecoming Director Cecilia Wade and her staff made sure that there were all types of exciting events planned for every FAU campus during this special week. In Davie, students danced the night away in 60’s genre costumes and sang karaoke for the “Celebrate the 60’s” event. The Treasure Coast continued their night of fun and games despite foul weather. MacArthur campus had tons of fun eating cotton candy and playing laser tag at their “Homecoming Carnival”. In Boca, hundreds of students toasted their marshmallows over the humongous outdoor bonfire, and then laughed their hinnies off at the comedy show, featuring comedians Orlando Jones and Bill Bellamy.
ROCK THE VOTE
FAU student government and community pulled off a miracle, saving Rock the Vote. On September 30th, shortly after the second hurricane ripped through South Florida and a state of emergency was declared, MTV decided to cancel their plans to appear at FAU for the Rock the Vote concert. With the odds stacked high against them, SGA refused to cancel the event. Instead of throwing in the towel, they turned to the FAU community for assistance in summoning local bands. Just in time for the planned show, SGA landed a MTV Rock the Vote bus and students pulled in five local Broward County bands who rescued the event by showing up to rock the stage.
The ‘backyard’ bands consisting of shortSTACK, Simplekill, Mission Veo, Words Now Heard, and The People Upstairs all played free of cost, allowing for a successful registering of voters. FAU students pulled together to make this one of the top events of the fall 2004 semester.
DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL
FAU alumni, Chris Carrabba reunited with his ex-band to deliver an “once-in-a-lifetime performance” to their loyal hometown audience at the UC Auditorium. This successful performance sold out to nearly 2,300 ecstatic fans that drove as far as Tennessee to experience what FAU students may have missed out on. Reportedly, the audience was much younger than the ‘college age’. Those that did show up for the action got to see Chris Carrabba perform a couple songs with his old band, Dashboard Confessional. The fans also enjoyed Chris’s much anticipated acoustic solo as he jammed out for nearly two hours, giving his cross-country visitors something to talk about on their long drive home.
