THE BEASTIE BOYS
The Beastie Boys mixed it up at the Fort Lauderdale Office Depot Center in mid-October, 2004. Inside the arena, gray hair, baldheads, and receding hairlines were not uncommon in the packed crowd of ‘whipper-snappers ‘ and 30-40 year-olds. Thousands came to see the Red-Sox and Yankees game and ‘break it down’ with the trio of “bad brothers”. These rap-pioneers contradict the ‘Law of Cool’ that states: as soon as a style comes in, it’s on the way out. The Backstreet Boyz should have taken notes on these classic rappers.
PITBULL
Lots of team work equaled lots of success at the December Pitbull concert. OWL Radio, Owl TV, Wackadoos, and even the FAU Idol, Chloe Dolandis all contributed to make it happen while Miami’s ‘gangsta’ rapper Pitbull tore up the UC Auditorium stage.
WYCLEFF
Last Halloween, Wycleff Jean came to FAU but the large crowd stayed at home. Those that did fill up half of the UC auditorium seats benefited from the ‘VIP-like’ atmosphere. Like a private show, the hip-hop star danced with the small crowd as he sang reggae, rapped and ‘freestyled’. Despite the surplus of empty seats and tickets, Wycleff rose above the turnout flop to entertain and bond with his true fans.
CHLOE DOLANDIS
Actress, singer, then Idol, what’s next for Chloe Dolandis? After years of persistence, Dolandis finally got a big break when Nickelodeon cast her as the host for their TV show, Splat. Then, weeks later she was crowned the new FAU Idol, which put her on stage – opening for Pitbull. She’s everywhere! We will definitely see more of Chloe Dolandis in the spotlight, and hopefully less of that FAU graduate, Carrot-top.
