The interim intercollegiate director of athletics, Dr. Richard Young, will not be returning for another year as athletic director for FAU. He has decided to retire – again. Currently, a team involving different FAU staff members is sifting through applications, in hopes of narrowing down the field to the top five candidates for the position of FAU’s new intercollegiate director of athletics and campus recreation. Campus Recreation is now a division of the athletics department.
As the only student representative on the committee, I feel that the most important qualities that an individual must have in order to “give back to the students” include:
- Experience with the campus recreation facility development (to help increase the facilities of workout areas and wellness centers on ALL campuses) and
- Fundraising experience (to help keep our athletic fee minimal).
Next year, the FAU football team will be playing six home games, and two other games in the state of Florida, UCF on September 13 and FIU on November 22. We hope to send students on a FREE trip to both UCF and FIU, and depending on student interest, the Football Office will continue to send buses from the Jupiter and Boca campuses – BUT THAT DEPENDS ON YOUR INTEREST IN THIS SERVICE.
Look for Student Government to throw bigger and better tailgate parties that will still include free food and drinks for all students, but also may include live music (bands and DJs), a car show, give-a-ways, and other fun competitions. We are also working with Homecoming and other departments in hopes to plan two huge tailgate parties, one for Parents’ Weekend and one for Homecoming. Stay tuned for details.
Student Government is also in contact with members of the Jupiter campus to plan a pep rally on housing-move-in day. Check your FAU email for more details on that event.
That’s all for now. And remember: Although $mitty is spelled with a dollar sign, Student Government using your A&S fees to give you free stuff, MAKES CENTS!
