Since the team’s slow start, the Blue Wave have more than measured up to the high expectations they had coming into this year. They’re undefeated in their conference, say nothing about posting a record of 23-6 including a 16-game winning streak.
FAU has been playing well in every facet of the game. They can score, they play good defense, they have solid starting pitching, and a bullpen that should get deeper as the season progresses.
A couple of Florida Atlantic blowouts in recent games have proven beneficial for Coach Kevin Cooney and the team. They’ve been able to use a lot of different pitchers keeping arms fresh and sharp, which is crucial down the stretch of the season. The more innings pitchers see the more options Cooney will have when he needs relief pitching.
FAU has mainly used Greg Eubanks, Tom McLane, Chris Pillsbury, Travis NeSmith, Matt O’ Brien, and Danny Core as starting pitchers. NeSmith threw a 7-inning no-hitter against LaSalle. He also happens to be undefeated with a 4-0 record. Both Pillsbury and Eubanks can say the same thing. Pillsbury is 5-0 and Eubanks is 3-0. Pillsbury also leads the team in strikeouts with 43.
Florida Atlantic has been using Tim McNab, Chris Della Rocco, and Jim Cooney out of the bullpen and McNab has established himself as the closer. He has six saves and a win this year in 14.2 innings pitched. He also has a .061 ERA. Meanwhile, Della Rocco and Cooney have been used for middle-relief situations and have become major contributors to the team’s success thus far.
