While most couples in their 20’s would be weary even getting a joint bank account, Dustin Orlando and Tara Ferrell have invested not only in a relationship, but an art gallery as well. Together they have formed OBJEX art space, an artist-owned and operated gallery, located in North Miami’s Fashion District.
Catering to local as well as national artists, OBJEX has become the new hub for underground art. From the candle-lit bathroom to the presence of a refrigerator, the intimate 2000-square foot gallery has a unique and relaxed feel to it. The comfort of the place is due largely to the casual and unassuming atmosphere that the gallery and its inhabitants provide. Both artists have collaborated their talents to provide the community with “a cutting-edge, avant-garde gallery that focuses on the kind of art that Miami isn’t used to seeing.”
Founded less than a year ago, the space has already been home to numerous artists of various styles and mediums. The artwork, which ranges from urban graffiti to contemporary lowbrow, is constantly changing to provide expression for our cities’ artists. According to the couple, OBJEX is committed to “providing support and increasing awareness for the underground art and cultural communities.”
The upcoming show, entitled “No Comply,” is a skateboard-inspired exhibit that will present artists who are either in the skateboard industry or skaters themselves. With graphic artists as well as staff photographers from major skateboard industries on hand, the show is guaranteed to be colorful and eclectic.
The opening reception will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. on Friday, March 22nd and will run for the rest of next week. Beverages and BBQ will be on hand as well as live performances by local bands ranging from punk to experimental electronic sounds. Come for the music, come for the food or just come for the sadistic pleasure of watching people hurt themselves while attempting skateboard tricks.
