Hillel of Florida Atlantic University, in collaboration with the recreation and fitness center and The Milk Drunk Foundation, hosted “Paws, Purrs, and Poses,” a puppy and kitten yoga event open to all students on Wednesday evening.
The event included two sessions: one from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. and the other from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. All students in attendance got to take a yoga class with an instructor; that is, if they weren’t too distracted by all the cute, furry animals.
“Paws, Purrs, and Poses” was a major success, with students filling up both sessions. Senior Daniel Souffront and junior Karen Jones, who attended the first session, said the event went “really well” and made it clear they wanted more events like this.
This is the second yoga event hosted by Hillel and is part of the organization’s Welcome Week; both events sold out. Jessica Rykus, the associate director at Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach, says that the club is “kicking the week off strong” and encourages students to attend the next event, the “Welcome Back Shabbat.”
Brigette Clem, a freshman who attended the second session, said “it was everything and more” than she expected, and was pleasantly surprised with the addition of kittens, specifically the hairless cat, which most attendees seemed to fall in love with.
Last semester, the animals brought in for yoga, affectionately nicknamed “the cheeses” due to their cheese-related names, were all adopted. The president and one of the founders of the Milk Drunk Foundation, Michelle Bucur, hopes that the same thing happens for this batch. “Our main focus is orphaned kittens and puppies, and sometimes farm animals,” says Bucur.
The Milk Drunk Foundation is a foster-based rescue, meaning it does not have a shelter. Bucur encourages students to reach out if an animal catches their attention or if they are interested in adopting any animals they met at “Paws, Purrs, and Poses.”
