Baseball: FAU drops second game of Sun Belt Conference Tournament 9-7 to ULM in 13 innings

The path to the Sun Belt championship game just got tougher for regular season champion FAU.

The Owls almost recovered from a late game deficit and losing their coach early, but fell 9-7 to ULM in 13 innings at Bowling Green Ballpark in Kentucky.

In the third inning, Owls head coach John McCormack was ejected from the game. Both benches were warned about arguing balls and strikes, according to OwlAccess.com.

Owls reliever Ahmed Garcia gave up a two-run home run to ULM shortstop Jeremy Sy in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the fifth seeded Warhawks the win. In the ninth inning, Owls second baseman Mike Albaladejo sent the game into extra innings with a two-out, two-run double to left center, driving in catcher Mike Spano and outfielder Geoff Jimenez.

Warhawks designated hitter Jeff Fuller reached on an error by Owls first baseman Mark Nelson to start the game winning rally for ULM.

In the top of 11th inning, the Owls took a 7-6 lead when outfielder Nathan Pittman doubled to bring home Spano. However, in the bottom half of the inning, Sy hit a two-out single to tie the game at 7.

The loss went to Garcia (3-1 record), his first of the season. Early on, Pittman hit a sacrifice fly, scoring outfielder Corey Keller and giving the Owls a 1-0 in the first inning. ULM took a 3-1 lead with two home runs in the second inning off Owls starting pitcher Kevin Alexander, who was yanked right after for reliever Mike Sylvestri.

Albaladejo went 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Pittman was 2 for 5 with three RBIs.

FAU plays the third game of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament  from Bowling Green Ballpark in Kentucky on Friday, May 25, at 8:00 p.m. against South Alabama.
