Free breakfast, tutoring and prizes tonight to kick off finals week

At 5 p.m. tonight, FAU will begin its second Up Owl Night in the Boca Student Union. The event will feature last-minute Supplemental Instruction sessions, tutoring, food and freebies.

MacKenzie Cerjan, a college algebra SI leader, called last semester’s event “pretty darn popular.” She said the event is expected to draw a record amount of students. “There were 89 students in one methods for [calculus] review,” she said. Tonight’s SI sessions and tutoring will be from 6 to 11 p.m.

Last year, the free late night breakfast in the Cafeteria had to turn away hungry students, said Ron Johnson, the Membership Services Coordinator for Campus Recreation. He is expecting a larger turn out this semester, but crowds shouldn’t be as big since tutoring sessions will be spread across campus, with staggered ending times to avoid long lines for food.

Johnson’s department has been advertising the event via Facebook, flyers and flash mobs.

And he predicts the free late night breakfast, which lasts from 9 to 11 p.m., will be the largest draw. “SI and tutoring are the highlights,” he said. “But of course the late night breakfast will be the main attraction.”

In addition to tutoring and free food, Up Owl Night offers attractions for the stressed out students and procrastinators.  Students will have the opportunity to get free massages and take yoga classes. The Student Union will also be hosting a gaming competition.

Despite the offerings, the main point of Up Owl Night is to help students kick off finals week. As Office Administrator for the Center for Learning and Student Success Eddie Santiago said: “The whole point of it is to help students succeed in their final exams.”
