Two FAU bands set to play a free concert at Coyote Jack’s

What: A free on-campus concert
Where: Coyote Jack’s on the Boca campus
When: Friday, Jan. 20 from 8-11 p.m.
Who: Fireside Prophets and The Stonecutters

There’s a new sound in town.

For the first time, FAU bands Fireside Prophets, and The Stonecutters are coming together for a free concert at Coyote Jack’s in the Student Union (Boca campus) on Friday, Jan. 20 from 8-11 p.m.

The bands are signed to Hoot/Wisdom Recordings, the university’s record label, and are currently in the process of writing, recording and promoting music.

The Coyote Jack’s concert will be one of the several shows the two bands plan to do this semester, they recently told the UP.

FAU indie band, The Stonecutters, take to the stage for a show at The Funky Buddha on Dec. 9, 2011.

The Stonecutters, an alternative folk band that uses harmonicas and multiple vocal harmonies in their music, will perform first. The band, who got its start in August, is currently making plans to record their first EP in Pensacola over spring break.

Their sound, they believe, is just different from what we hear around South Florida. And their drummer, Jason Hester, had an interesting way of describing it.

“There seems to be a lot of chug-a-beer-and-smash-the-can-across-your-head [kind of] music,” Hester told the UP last month. “We’re more like the carry-you-up-the-stairs-lay-you-down-and-make-love-to-you kind of music. But we definitely brought you flowers first.”

The Fireside Prophets, who got their start four years ago as a reggae/rock fusion band, will take the stage after the ‘Cutters. Last year, they recorded an EP called “Resinate,” which they plan to release some time this semester. Some of their musical influences are Bob Marley and Sublime. They were featured as the UP’s best musical artists of 2011.

Their lead singer, senior Justin D’Alfonso, started the band his freshman year. He even had the lead singer of the Stonecutters, Myles Corvalan (who was then a solo artist), play with them on their first recording. D’Alfonso hasn’t given up on his dream to pursue music ever since.
“I live and breathe music,” he told the UP last month. “When I’m on stage, it’s the only time I feel alive and at home.”
