Maher highlights SG accomplishments in State of the Student Body Address

Student Government’s got a lot to boast about.

On Oct. 13, Student Body President Ayden Maher delivered the annual State of the Student Body address at Alumni plaza – between the Rec Center and the Alumni Center.

Maher spoke to a group of around 50 students, faculty members, and administrators. He spent the majority of the speech highlighting SG’s past accomplishments.

“We’ve passed countless bills and resolutions allocating student funds and voicing the opinion of the student body,” said Maher. “We traveled to the state’s capitol and advocated to our state legislators not to cut funding for higher education.”

Over $120 million would be cut from statewide university funding this year under Rick Scott’s budget proposal.

Other SG achievements mentioned include the creation and funding of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender resource center in January, and SG’s injected over $60,000 to make the Student Union “more aesthetically pleasing and welcoming for students.”

But that’s not all Maher and SG have up their sleeves.

SG hopes to create culture is by uniting all seven campuses under a common pride for FAU.

“We want people to feel like they’re a part of something,” Maher told the UP. “School pride is the cornerstone of everything here and it’s a benefit for all of us to be proud [of the University].”

He didn’t elaborate on how the uniting would be done.

Maher believes that if students are proud of their school, University-wide issues will become significantly easier to handle.

2011 represents a turning point for FAU, according to Maher. “Long gone are the days of Find Another University. FAU has become a first class state institution.”
