Owls sweep Warhawks 3-1

FAU (23-13, 10-5) extended its winning streak to six games as they knocked off Louisiana-Monroe University (17-17, 5-10) 3-1 in game three of a Sun-Belt Conference weekend series.

Friday and Saturday’s games were both low scoring and Sunday was no different. ULM came close to scoring first as they loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second inning. Starting pitcher R.J. Alvarez (5-2) got himself out of the jam as he struck out the next two batters and flied out the third. In the next inning, the Warhawks once again loaded the bases with no outs, but Alvarez got the Owls out of the inning unscathed once more.

Alvarez pitched five innings allowing only three hits, no runs, two walks, and struck out four batters.

It was FAU who got on the board first as centerfielder Nathan Pittman knocked in an RBI. The Owls added on to their lead later in the sixth inning as catcher Mike Albaladejo scored a second RBI single bringing first baseman Sean Bukovich across home plate for the second time in the game. Buckovich finished 3-for-4 with two runs.

In the top of the seventh, designated hitter Andy Mee came in to pitch and surrendered the Warhawks only run of the game as first baseman Joey Rapp smacked a solo home run to right field.

Later, in the bottom of the eighth, Mike Spano drove a solo homer to right field to give the Owls a 3-1 advantage going into the top of the ninth.

Pitcher Hugh Adams closed out the game for FAU allowing no runs to secure the 3-1 victory.

The Owls will look to extend their winning streak to seven games as they travel to Orlando, FL to take on University of Central Florida on Tuesday, April 19 at 6:30 pm.
