It’s Not Woodstock, It’s Hootstock

Woodstock music festival was held in 1969, but now FAU has come up with its twisted twin – Hootstock ’08. The event is a spin-off of last year’s Battle of the Bands and promises to provide students and outsiders a little taste of the local music scene for an all-day affair at the Boca campus Housing Lawn on Saturday, April 12 from 12 noon to 9 p.m.

It started as a simple Battle of the Bands last year, when the Program Board along with Owl Radio decided to put together a show for anyone to come and enjoy good music while watching bands compete for a prize.

Mark Ortenzo, station manager of Owl Radio, admits that Hootstock ’08 was created simply to bring people together and have them share this experience along with the bands performing.

“It’s a great thing for people to attend, because you can bring anyone and everyone and they will enjoy it,” said Ortenzo. “Plus, you also get to hear some of the talent the school and the community have to offer.”

There will be 12 bands from the coast of South Florida competing in Hootstock ’08 and a special guest performance by Ft. Lauderdale band, Mission Veo.Paul Cohen, a volunteer at Owl Radio, explains that this year the line-up promises to be a “great and diverse one.”

“We have some punk bands, some acoustic bands, and some alternative,” said Cohen. “Basically, a little bit of everything.”

Let’s not forget that besides the show being put together for the community to enjoy, the bands are also competing for a prize that could be beneficial for some of them that are looking to get signed.

“The prize for the winner this year involves a contract with FAU and to be an opening act at our next concert,” said Cohen. “Basically, if we have another Rock the Owl [FAU’s Program Board- sponsored concert], then they would open for the main act.”

Cohen hopes the event will resemble Woodstock, bringing a laid-back atmosphere to the campus. “Bring a blanket, a cooler, and you’re set,” said Cohen. “We’re having a BBQ and it’s all-day fuel so be prepared.”
