The dark cloud of defeat is finally starting to show some rays of sunlight after Florida Atlantic men’s basketball had its first win of the new year after a 58-51 victory over the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles on Thursday night. While the Owls snapping their season-worst nine-game losing streak might be a call for celebration, don’t get excited just yet. FAU will face yet another tough test in the Burrow Saturday night against a very talented Louisiana Tech team that is sporting a 13-4 record led by their leading scorer Alex Hamilton. The Bulldogs are looking to bounce back with a win after their loss at inner conference program FIU on Thursday.

Women’s Basketball: Owls lose offensive shootout to Southern Mississippi

Florida Atlantic women’s basketball fought late to make a comeback, but was unable to contain the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles’ offense in Thursday night’s 89-80 loss. The scoring started early as the Owls (10-5, 2-2 Conference USA) and Southern Miss combined for 51 first quarter points. FAU struggled to keep up after allowing 22 points in the following two quarters. USM (9-6, 3-1 Conference USA) finished the game making 62.1 percent of its shots, including 7-of-11 from behind the three-point arc. The Owls made only 37.7 percent of their field goal attempts on the night.
