The Florida Atlantic men’s basketball continued its conference championship run by defeating the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners 82-58 to advance into the second round of the Conference USA tournament.

Rice junior center Andrew Drone scored the game-deciding layup off of an inbounds play with 55 seconds remaining in the game to give Rice an 86-84 lead that FAU was unable to recover from.

Men’s basketball preview: Owls take their last road trip of the season against Rice and North Texas

Florida Atlantic men's basketball embarks on its last road trip of the regular season this week with matchups in Texas against Rice and North Texas. FAU (7-19, 5-8 C-USA) is coming off an 89-82 loss at home on Saturday to UTEP. After trailing by as much as 18, the Owls cut the Miners’ lead to three late in the contest before their comeback attempt fell short. Here are some things to look for in both games:

Men’s Basketball: FAU’s comeback bid falls short in loss to UTEP

Despite being down by as many as 18 points in the second half, Florida Atlantic men’s basketball’s bid to split the season series versus UTEP fell just short, losing 89-82 Saturday night. Florida Atlantic (7-19, 5-8 Conference USA) came within three points with 2:32 remaining in the game, but the Owls were unable to score any more points and UTEP (15-11, 7-6 Conference USA) knocked down four late free-throws to close out the game. It was a tale of two halves for FAU offensively and defensively, shooting only 40 percent from the field while allowing UTEP to shoot 57 percent from the field in the first half. However, the Owls shot 53 percent from the field while holding the Miners to only 44 percent in the second half.

Men’s Basketball Preview: FAU hosts a pair of Texas universities while looking to snap its two-game losing streak

After losing both games last week, including its worst loss of the season against conference leading University of Alabama-Birmingham, Florida Atlantic men’s basketball lost three of its last four games and has dropped to the bottom-third of the conference standings. This week, the Owls (6-18, 4-7 Conference USA) will host a pair of Texas universities in the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners (4-20, 2-9 Conference USA) on Thursday Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. and the University of Texas at El Paso Miners (13-11, 5-6 Conference USA) on Saturday Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. Here's what you need to know for both matchups:

Men’s Basketball: FAU holds on late with balanced scoring to beat Charlotte

Despite seeing Florida Atlantic’s 11-point halftime lead reduced to four with about a minute remaining, junior guard Adonis Filer made six consecutive free throws to ice the game and give the Owls an 82-77 win. FAU (6-16, 4-5 Conference USA) had five players score double digits. Filer led the the way with 18 points and seven rebounds. The Owls held Charlotte (7-14, 4-5 Conference USA) to 49 percent shooting and forced the 49ers into 17 turnovers, which led to 21 points for FAU.
