Men’s Basketball: Owls Use Total Team Effort to Down UTSA

January 23, 2016

Florida Atlantic men’s basketball’s 86-71 win against the UTSA Roadrunners was a milestone victory for Michael Curry who picked up his first conference road win of his tenure as head coach. The Owls (5-15, 3-4 C-USA) and Roadrunners (4-16, 2-5 C-USA) were both looking for their third conference win of the season heading into Saturday’s afternoon matchup. The Owls scored a season-high 86 points led by local Florida product freshman Jeantal Cylla, who contributed a team-high 22 points, reaching the 20-point mark for the second game in a row. Even more impressive was the total team effort put forth in Saturday’s performance on both ends of the floor.

Men’s Basketball: Jeantal Cylla reaches career-high scoring total in loss at UTEP

January 22, 2016

One game after Florida Atlantic men’s basketball completed a comeback where it trailed by 20 points at halftime, the team found itself in a similar hole as the UTEP Miners carried a 40-20 lead into the half. However, the Owls (4-15, 2-4 Conference USA) were unable to make a second comeback in a week as they fell 71-56. FAU missed its first six shots in the game, helping UTEP (11-8, 3-3 Conference USA) open up on a 15-0 run, 5 minutes and 7 seconds into the game. Head coach Michael Curry then subbed in senior forward Javier Lacunza and freshman forward Jesse Hill.

Men’s Basketball: Jackson Trapp’s game winning shot completes comeback victory versus Louisiana Tech

January 17, 2016

Men’s basketball rallied from being down 20 points at halftime to beat Louisiana Tech 63-61 after senior guard Jackson Trapp nailed his only 3-pointer of the night with three seconds left in the game. Senior guard Solomon Poole and freshman guard Nick Rutherford led the comeback with 16 points each. The Owls (4-14, 2-3 Conference USA) started the game slow on offense, going 1-for-10 from the floor in the first eight minutes of the game and only scoring four points. The Bulldogs (13-5, 2-3 Conference USA), on the other hand, started the game shooting 1-for-7 before going on a 29-5 run in a ten minute span to take a 36-16 lead going into the halftime.

Men’s Basketball: Jesse Hill’s 22 points not enough as UCF rolls 75-61

December 12, 2015

A poor performance in the paint against the University of Central Florida led Florida Atlantic men’s basketball to a 75-61 defeat Saturday night, their sixth of the year. The Knights (5-3) outrebounded the Owls 43-31 for the game, including 12 offensive rebounds. Their effort on the inside helped UCF take the lead in the first half and keep it for the rest of the game. 7-foot-6 center Tacko Fall proved to be the backbone of the UCF inside defense with six blocks, continuing the Owls’ (2-6) scoring struggle.

Men’s Basketball: Jesse Hill has career game as Owls defeat Ave Maria 72-59

December 11, 2015

Florida Atlantic men’s basketball needed a late second-half run to put away the Ave Maria Gyrenes 72-59 Tuesday night. Ave Maria (1-9) took a brief four-point lead (their only lead of the game) midway through the second half before a 9-0 run helped FAU (2-5) recapture the lead they held previously during the entire first half. FAU ran much of their second half offense through freshman forward Jesse Hill.
