Men’s Basketball: Owls give up early lead in loss to Florida State

Florida Atlantic men’s basketball couldn’t defend a 12-point first half lead as the Florida State Seminoles pulled out the victory in the game’s closing moments, defeating the Owls 64-59 in the 2015 MetroPCS Orange Bowl Classic at the BB&T Center on Saturday. A second half scuffle between the two teams awoke a sleeping Florida State team as the Seminoles cut FAU’s lead down to just four points with over 11 minutes left in the game. The re-energized Seminoles (8-2), aided by two three-point baskets by sophomore guard Xavier-Rathan Mayes, grabbed their first lead of the game with fewer than eight minutes remaining.

Men’s Basketball: Poor shooting performance leads to 81-62 loss to Tennessee

Florida Atlantic men’s basketball’s offensive struggles continued in their 81-62 defeat to the University of Tennessee Volunteers on Wednesday night. The Owls (2-8) missed 12 of their first 15 shots in the game and finished with a 34.5 field-goal percentage, making only 20-of-58 total shots. Sophomore C.J. Truman struggled against the team he originally signed with out of high school. He finished with seven points, but was only able to make one of his six shots from the floor. Five of Turman’s points came from foul shots.

Men’s Basketball: Jesse Hill has career game as Owls defeat Ave Maria 72-59

Florida Atlantic men’s basketball needed a late second-half run to put away the Ave Maria Gyrenes 72-59 Tuesday night. Ave Maria (1-9) took a brief four-point lead (their only lead of the game) midway through the second half before a 9-0 run helped FAU (2-5) recapture the lead they held previously during the entire first half. FAU ran much of their second half offense through freshman forward Jesse Hill.

Men’s Basketball: Owls drop two-of-three in 2015 Men Against Breast Cancer Challenge

Men’s basketball (1-4) lost two of three matchups this past weekend while participating in the 2015 Men Against Breast Cancer Challenge, hosted by Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The Owls’ win was their first of the season as they defeated the host Miami Redhawks. Their two losses came against Northeastern and Lipscomb University. Here’s what you need to know from this past weekend’s games:

Men’s Basketball: Owls drop season opener to Michigan State, 82-55

Men’s Basketball was unable to start the 2015-16 season victorious as they lost to Michigan State University 82-55 in East Lansing, Mich. Friday night. The Owls (0-1) got off to a slow start offensively, scoring four points in the first seven minutes of the game compared to 20 points from the no. 13 ranked Spartans. They finished the first half making only 8-of-31 shots and 1-of-8 three pointers. FAU’s defense was able to force eight Michigan State (1-0) turnovers, but committed 14 team fouls by halftime. This allowed the Spartans to convert 11-of-16 free throws during that stretch.
