Five cool clubs at FAU for new students to join

As a fledgeling Owl, you could do one of two things – sit around in your room wondering what college life is supposed to be like or go out and live it.

If you get involved in a club, you could have the time of your life learning martial arts, practicing your techniques for the zombie apocalypse with the latest video game or running around on ice chasing a puck. There’s a huge list of clubs you can join on Collegiate Link, but here are some of the awesome clubs that got back to the UP telling us why you should join.

What: A club focusing on the practice of Tae Kwon Do, a Korean martial art with an emphasis on kicking. In this club, you’ll learn Tae Kwon Do in a fun and safe environment. You will also learn terminology and the tenets of Tae Kwon Do – courtesy, integrity, self-control, perseverance and indomitable spirit.

When: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (Subject to change)

Where: Upstairs, south side of basketball arena

Why you should join: “There are many personal idiosyncratic reasons that students will give you (e.g. self-discipline, self-control, etc.) but more generally to become more flexible, physically fit, and mentally strong.  Come and work out with us and see for yourself! Students sometimes find that the toughest thing to do is simply to show up to their first workout.  We have some real nice people in the club.  After the first workout many students get hooked. Maybe you will too!” – Bruce J. Arneklev, Faculty Advisor to the FAU Tae Kwon Do Club

What: A traveling team where students play ice hockey, despite the campus having no ice rink. The players play at the Saveology Iceplex in Coral Springs. You’ll have the opportunity to represent the community in positive ways through charity and fundraising events as well as strengthen personal growth in areas such as sportsmanship. You can be a part of the team without being a player. You can work with equipment, photography, and more. To be an active player, you have to try out and make the team.

When: Tryouts are on August 31 and September 1.

Where: Saveology Iceplex in Coral Springs.

Why you should join: “There’s a lot to be learned in team sports (sportsmanship, discipline, commitment, respect, etc.) and being part of a team you can rely on team members as you learn socially to be on the same page with your teammates in order to excel in the sport.  Clubs have a lot to offer students for going forward –– most friends are made in clubs.  Most students who come in knowing no one make close friends just by getting involved.” – Scott Grosky, assistant coach and general manager of the Ice Hockey Team
