Movie picks that will PUMP you up

FAU Campus Recreation has just announced its spring schedule. The programs offer a great way for FAU students to stay in shape, while making new friends and enjoying all the ‘college life’ campus has to offer. Sign-ups began last week and run through the end of the month. For specifics on deadlines, captain meetings, and game schedules, visit www.fau.edu/student/camprec.

With game time soon approaching, captains need to start thinking of strategies for properly prepping their team to take the coveted title. Players need to start considering how they are going to mentally prepare for the big day.

In accordance with my duties as unofficial mascot of FAU Sports, I’ve taken the liberty of compiling a list of recommendations for movie viewing that will be sure to raise the spirit of any competitor. Every professional athlete has their favorite sports movie on the tip of their tongue and on the shelf of their living room. If you plan on giving it your all out there, there’s nothing like a great sports movie to inspire the best out of an athlete. Here are my movie recommendations that will be sure to get your heart pounding in anticipation of your moment of intramural triumph:

Leagues:

Soccer – The classic Sylvester Stallone flick, Victory is sure to get you going. Hardcore play combined with hardcore prison politics make for a no-holds barred action packed session sure to make you suck up that sprain or cramp come game day. For you lady Owls, I recommend Bend It Like Beckham. The girls play hard and tough while pursuing the all important love affair.

Basketball – You know it – Hoosiers. This feel good, underdog flick is sure to make your team give it their all despite most of your players having only stepped on the court a week or so prior to game time.

Volleyball – Top Gun. Beach volleyball made famous. And if your team has more of a satirical attitude toward their play, check out Meet the Parents for tips on how not to be a close-knit team.

Tournaments:

Softball – Major League. Technically it’s a baseball movie, but it’s a classic and it provides resolution to intramural tensions: insecurity about your skills, lack of preparation, and the desire to be champions. And besides, the Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger combo is cool. And Lady Owls, A League of Their Own is an obvious must. Remember, there’s no crying in baseball!

Flag-Football – The Program. This is the greatest college football movie ever. Now don’t go psycho on me and jump your motorcycle off anything or lay down in crowded traffic. Remember, I want you to get psyched, not psycho. But this is an all in one tour de force film showcasing all of what it takes to be a lean mean football squad.

Dodgeball – Well, Dodgeball. Leave your blindfolds at home.

Tennis – There’s really no reason to get psyched to play tennis. Just get a good night’s sleep.

Table Tennis – Searching for Bobby Fischer. I know what you’re thinking, isn’t that a chess movie? Yeah, but it’s played on a table and, well, it’s all I could come up with.

So, good luck out there FAU athlete wanna-be’s. And remember, a key ingredient to a great sports movie is the importance of sportsmanship.

You will receive a rating by the Campus Recreation Department at the close of play. Don’t commit major fouls, have a good attitude, use decent language, respect the officials, and, please, don’t embarrass yourself by fighting.
