Summer is coming to a swift end, but one student organization is here to ensure that the barbecues, parties and days spent sprawled out soaking up the sun live on.

The Jewish Owls-Chabad, an organization dedicated to providing students with a place to learn about Judaism, will be teaming up with the Chabad Student Center of Boca Raton to bring FAU’s first ever Kickoff BBQ and Jewish music festival to life.

Students can escape from the hustle and bustle of the fall semester to the Housing Lawn on Wednesday, Sept. 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Students will be able to enjoy some kosher barbecue while jamming out to the sounds of Jewish music.

Both organizations have been hard at work preparing for this event, promoting it on social media and  Weeks of Welcome, a 10-day event promoting organizations and clubs where students can gain some insight on how they can shape their social and academic lives.

Jewish Owls president Itamar Ben-Avi has said that although they have hit bumps in the road with the business side of things, the whole process of preparation has been “easy.”

The Chabad Student Center’s co-director Rivka Liberow confirmed that Chassidic rapper Nosson Zand will be performing at the event. Zand has worked with Liberow in the past, and is “more than happy” to perform at the barbecue and get to meet the student body, according to Ben-Avi.

Students around campus are getting amped up about this celebration in the beginning of the fall semester.

Erika Vizoso, a senior business major, is no stranger to these sorts of events. “It’s pretty cool to see something like this happening, because it’s just another way to show how FAU is a huge melting pot,” she said. “Free kosher food is always nice too!”

The Jewish Owls have actively serviced the community of FAU’s student body since their inception in 2005.

They’ve provided a place for students to learn Jewish values, and have played the role of a second home for Jewish students to “connect with their identities,” said Ben-Avi.

The Chabad Student Center is all about uniting people and highlighting the “unity in community,” according to the center’s co-director Rivka Liberow.

Liberow and her husband, Boruch Shmuel, have helped the Jewish college community including FAU, Lynn University and Palm Beach State College since 2005. She said they offered a “piece of home, love and support.”

Both organizations held several events in the past that drew in large crowds, such as Shabbat dinners hosted by the Jewish Owls, and the Chabad Student Center’s “Coffees and Kabbalah” at the FAU Starbucks.

The other events were popular among students, but this will be the largest event they have held at FAU, according to Liberow. Ben-Avi and Liberow are hoping that the Kickoff BBQ will pave the way for more events on campus that invite students to “come home to the Chabad.”

Liberow said that events like this are incredibly important because they provide “awareness of organizations.” She is hoping this event will give an inviting idea of culture to the community, and to engage a larger audience at Florida Atlantic.

The event is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9. Students can get more information about attending this free event by checking the center’s website, and can contact the center by email at [email protected] or by phone at (561) 827-3165.
