Football: Schnellenberger set to coach in The Battle of Florida Jan. 21 and honored by the Miami Dolphins on Sunday

After getting shut out in his college coaching finale last week, it looks like Howard Schnellenberger will get one final opportunity to put some points on the board at FAU Stadium.

The former FAU coach will man the South team during The Battle of Florida, which will be held Jan. 21 at FAU Stadium. Schnellenberger will be facing off against former FSU coach Bobby Bowden, the coach of the North team.

“This game is more than a football game for college seniors to show their wares to the scouts and owners of the National Football League,” Schnellenberger told fauowlaccess.com. “This is an opportunity for this community to do what I said football would do for this part of Florida…This can be really, really big and be a success in the game of football. There is no downside.”

Schnellenberger’s former running back Alfred Morris will be among the players participating in the game, according to Owl Access.

In addition to coaching the all-star game, Schnellenberger’s career will be celebrated by the Miami Dolphins this weekend.

On Sunday, Dec. 12 the Miami Dolphins will honor Schnellenberger for his impact on South Florida football, both professionally and collegiately. The 77-year-old coach won a national championship in 1983 with the Miami Hurricanes, and was the offensive coordinator for the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins.

“That team holds a special place in my heart because the quality of the individuals was so much less than the quality of the group as a whole and they won with heart and determination,” Schnellenberger said to miamidolphins.com. “We had a lot of ordinary players as individuals, especially on defense, which is why they were called the No-Name Defense, and other than guys like Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield, and Mercury Morris, they were pretty ordinary on offense but played like a team.”
