Football: Leach no longer an option as FAU’s next coach

Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, once a candidate to become FAU’s next head coach, instead decided to take the coaching position at Washington State according to CBS Sports.

Leach, who has 23 years of coaching experience, did not coach the past two years after being fired by Texas Tech when he refused to apologize to receiver Adam James for “actions that put James at risk for further injury,” according to school officials. He led Texas Tech to a bowl game bid in each of his ten seasons.

The Owls average 14 points per game, second worst in FBS. Leach’s teams regularly finished near the top of the nation in points scored and passing offense, as Texas Tech averaged 20 more points and about 300 more yards per game when he arrived, according to klewtv.com.

“I have always admired the tradition of Washington State…It’s a team that has battled through some hard times and shows great promise in the future,” said Leach. “I’m proud to be a part of this team.”

With Leach off its list, FAU turns its search to replace Howard Schnellenberger elsewhere.
