Letter to the Editor

From Stephanie Alvarez

Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011

To whom it may concern:

I wanted to call to your attention that I feel this article should not have been published. Does an editor actually review what you print? First off you title the story “Case of the girl who cried wolf.. or rape” and have headlines that read “Busted! & The stupid things students say to police.” Monica is right in her statement that rape is a serious allegation, YES rape is serious. Maybe someone should have looked into the defintion of rape… meaning not consenting to sex…which if you are drunk to the point where you need to go to the hospital you cannot LEGALLY give consent… therefore this girl was infact raped. You basically call this girl a whore and try to say that she brought this upon herself. You sexualize women and assume that because shes inviting guys to her room to drink that that equates to her asking for sex. “Every night a new guy”? WHO are you to judge this girl, are you sexist? Because I highly doubt you would publish a story talking about a guy being with different girls every night and question it. Which brings my next point.. you do not even mention anything about this alleged rapist. Instead you put all the blame on this girl because she sleeps around and drinks. Where is your logic in saying this is a “serious psychological problem” ah yes of course lets pathologize and play doctor and lay claim that because this

girls drinks alcohol in the company of guys and sleeps with them she MUST have a “serious psychological problem.” You bring up the topic of AIDS futhermore assuming things you do not know about this “whore” Just because someone ingages in sexual acts ( which you would not be even talking about if this were concerning a male) it does not mean that they do not use protection. Mr. Grudo and the rest of the UP staff should be ashamed. How dare you downplay someone’s rape, which as I stated before legally this girl was raped because she could not give consent. How would you feel if your daughter or mother or sister had been raped but someone publishes an article about how it was her fault for drinking and having sex on other occasions beforehand…
