Young and talented

After its impressive ending streak last season, the FAU women’s tennis team is ready to get started again.

The team is hoping to build off its 7-5 run last season, as it is less than a month away from competing in the FIU Fall Invitational in Miami on Oct. 15.

“Last season ended well for us,” said head coach Marcy Hora-Cava. “We had nine wins, and we beat teams in our conference, and overall it was a really positive end for us. I think we’re going to be ranked soon.”

One talented young player that helps justify Hora-Cava’s confidence is sophomore Erika Mrazkova. She was one of the Owls’ most productive players last season, and one of only three players to win double-digit matches (she won 12).

Despite her talent and success, one poor moment from last season resonates in Mrazkova’s mind.

She was the last player to enter the game against Kennesaw State, and because of that she feels an extra burden from the loss.

“Last season we lost versus Kennesaw State 4 to 3,” Mrazkova said. “And I felt like I lost the whole match for the team, and it was really disappointing.”

Although the tough loss has stuck with Mrazkova, she will soon have an opportunity to bounce back.

The three-day FIU Fall Invitational will serve Mrazkova and her teammates as an important stepping stone before they begin their foray into the regular season.

“I think this season we can be in the semifinals of the conference, for sure,” Mrazkova said.
