FAU’s next president will be a provost from another university.
On Thursday, Feb. 25, Terry Hickey, Mary Jane Saunders and Gary Miller were declared the finalists to replace former president Frank T. Brogan.
Hickey is the provost and executive vice president at University of Central Florida in Orlando. Saunders is the provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Cleveland State University in Ohio. Gary Miller is the provost and vice president of academic affairs and research at Wichita State University in Kansas.
So what does a provost do? Usually the university’s senior academic administrator, the provost is the second-in-command to the president.
In fact, FAU’s provost John Pritchett was appointed interim president when Brogan resigned in September to become the chancellor of the State University System. He now oversees Florida’s 11 public universities.
Hickey, Saunders and Miller will visit the Boca, Fort Lauderdale, Jupiter and Treasure Coast campuses on Monday, March 1, and Tuesday, March 2 to meet with students, faculty and staff. (Full schedule below.)
On Wednesday, March 3, FAU’s Board of Trustees (BOT) — an 11-member board tasked with making the top university decisions — will interview each of the three candidates and select one to serve as FAU’s sixth president.
Open forums will be held on the Boca, Davie, Jupiter and Treasure Coast campuses:
