Women’s basketball: FAU ekes out victory over UCF

The Lady Owls (4-5) ended their defensive woes as they played their way to a 63-61 win over the UCF Knights (2-3) at The Burrow on Saturday, Dec 12.

“I think it was intensity on defense that gave us the win,” said FAU senior guard Brittany Bowe. “Intensity on the defensive end transfers over to the offensive end, and that’s what the coaches have been stressing on all week.”

The emphasis on defense paid off. FAU held the Knights to 31.8 percent on field goals and only 20 percent from 3-point range.

On the offensive side, FAU made 51.8 percent of its shots from the field, and senior guard Carla Stubbs scored a season-high 19 points, while teammate Erica Caldwell added a personal-best 15. Bowe had 13 points and two assists.

“We were very focused on what we were doing tonight,” said Owls Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. “I am very pleased with how we played.”

FAU fell behind 15-6 with 13:30 left in the first half, and the Knights looked to be in control of the game after a 3-pointer from UCF guard Angelica Mealing. However, midway through the first half, FAU staged a comeback and took an 18-16 lead, their first of the game. The Owls would not surrender that lead.

FAU’s biggest run came shortly after Bowe was benched for getting into foul trouble early in the second half.

“I had four fouls with 16 minutes to go in the second half,” said Bowe, who missed a large portion of the second half. “But my team really came together and went on the biggest run of the whole game while I was out.”

That big run gave FAU a 15-point lead with 6:44 remaining in the game, but in the waning moments of the match, the Knights rallied to bring the score within 2 after UCF guard Aisha Patrick scored on a breakaway layup. Despite the late scare, FAU held on for the victory..

“We were playing tired, but we overcame that,” Bowe said. “We regrouped and brought it back together to win the game.”

The win marked the first time the Lady Owls have been able to win consecutive games against the Knights, having beaten them 68-63 last season.
