Mistakes hounded FAU as the Kent State Lady Golden Flashes took charge of the court at The Burrow on Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Missed shots, poor passing and an ineffective defense were constant throughout the game and ultimately cost FAU (2-3) an 84-66 defeat.

FAU senior guard Brittany Bowe, who had been the team’s lead scorer the previous four games, only managed 8 points and five assists, while teammate junior guard Lyrell Barfield was the star of the night, as she led the team in scoring with 16 points. However, that was still not enough to overcome the overall poor play of the Lady Owls.

“We missed some silly shots and didn’t make free throws,” Bowe said. “We can pick different things, but all in all it just came down to our defensive effort.”

The defensive effort was nonexistent to start the game, as Kent State (3-1) took a commanding 16-point lead six minutes into the game. However, FAU was able to rally late in the first half to come within 4 points of Kent State.

The score at halftime was 39-35 in favor of the Golden Flashes after a last-second driving layup by Bowe. FAU sophomore guard Breana Turner was the bright spot of the first half and led the team with 12 points and five rebounds.

Within minutes of the second half, the Lady Owls were down by 12 due to poor play, and that doomed their slim chances of a comeback. Kent State scored 29 points off of turnovers, resulting in an FAU loss.

“We started out, both the beginning of the game and the second half, the exact same way: passive, nonaggressive,” said Owls Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. “You can’t do that if you’re going to play college basketball.”
