As Halloween approaches, students can give and get their ghoulish jollies at the second annual Brunch Buddies event. Volunteers will be enjoying a free meal while playing games with residents of the Sunrise Home for the Disabled.
Brunch Buddies will take place on Oct. 24 in the Carole & Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium on the Boca campus from noon to 3 p.m. This event is sponsored by Students Advocating Volunteer Involvement (SAVI) in partnership with the Weppner Center for Civic Engagement and Service.
According to Marianna Ortigosa, a sophomore pre-nursing major and director of SAVI, Brunch Buddies is but one of many events where students can volunteer.
Some of the games at the Brunch Buddies event include a mini-pumpkin carving contest, Halloween Bingo, a piñata and a dance contest.
According to Nori Carter, the associate director of the Weppner Center, the Brunch Buddies event falls on Make a Difference Day, which is also on Oct. 24 Volunteers across the country will be participating in community service, but Carter called it pure coincidence.
“All the events for the fall are planned for in the summer, mainly on the weekends as to not interfere with students’ class schedules,” said Ortigosa.
According to Ortigosa, this Brunch Buddies is different from the previous year’s event.
“Last year the event was held at Ascension Catholic Church with the Sunrise Home for the Disabled. This year the home contacted SAVI and asked if they can be
a part of the Brunch Buddies again,” said Ortigosa.
Carter claimed that this year’s brunch at FAU will be better.
“By having it at FAU this year, it will allow for the students to add some sunshine to the residents’ day,” said Carter.
Ortigosa wishes some realizations happen at the upcoming event.
“[I hope] the adults from the home have a fun afternoon of interaction and that the students who volunteer are able to share their talents with others while seeing the good in sharing their time in community service,” explained Ortigosa.
