Money for the heart

Junior Amy Cartwright, along with 50 sorority members from Theta Phi Alpha, doesn’t normally get up early, but on Sept. 26 they will be up before 7:30 a.m, and for good reason — to walk around campus for the Start! Heart Walk.

FAU’s Start! Heart Walk will begin at 9 a.m. in front of the Weppner Center for the Civic Engagement & Service. The event is hosted by the American Heart Association (AHA) in order to raise money for cardiovascular research. This year, the goal for the walk is to raise more than $20,000 and have more than 1,000 participants.

According to the AHA, heart disease is the No. 1 killer in the United States. Because of FAU’s medical research, the AHA has partnered with FAU to host this event for 18 years. “FAU researchers have received substantial funding  — nearly $600,000 — over the last six years from the American Heart Association Florida division to research cardiovascular disease and stroke,” said Nori Carter, assistant director of the Weppner Center for the Civil Engagement & Service.

According to Cartwright, the walk route, 3.2 miles, is easily done in 45 minutes, or it can be run in 20.
“In the past, [former President Frank] Brogan would speak at the event and run it,” said Cartwright.

Cartwright is a team leader at FAU for the Heart Walk. The AHA is one of her sorority’s philanthropic efforts, and it’s part of her job to make sure the event is organized and her group members show up.

Currently, Cartwright has raised $794.81 for the event but hopes to see an increase before the walk.
“We had a $500 donation from Cosmopolitan,” said Cartwright. “It was pretty cool. They gave it to us for charity.”

Unlike Cartwright, this will be Carter’s first Heart Walk and she feels that the most important aspect of the Start! Heart Walk is volunteering.
“The importance of volunteering is to show support for the American Heart Association whose hard work in creating awareness of heart health positively impacts the lives of others as well as pays tribute to those who have survived heart disease and those who have lost their battle with heart disease,” said Carter.

Anyone interested in donating can visit www.palmbeachheartwalk.org. Donations are a $25 minimum, or you can donate at the walk.
