Gallery opening is a success

Empty boxes of wine and empty food platters, a crowd of more than 250 people, most of whom are not students, and multiple discussions of the deep meaning of a photograph can only mean one thing: There’s an art gallery opening at the FAU Boca campus. The Schmidt and Ritter galleries worked together to put on the 2009 South Florida Cultural Consortium Media and Visual Arts Fellowship Winners exhibition.
“The whole event is built as new work,” Manjunath Pendakur, Ph.D., the dean of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, stated during the gallery opening on Friday, Sept. 11. “One way to think of this work is that it is innovation that takes place.”

Some of the South Florida-based artists have a reputation for being FAU graduates and photography professors. Nancy Spielman, whose dog paintings can be seen in the Ritter Art Gallery, is an adjunct FAU professor in the Department of Visual Arts and Art History and received a master’s in fine arts from FAU in 2006.

Samantha Salzinger, whose work can be enjoyed in the Ritter Art Gallery, has a photography degree from Yale University and is currently a photography professor at Palm Beach Community College. For most of her work, she builds actual sets in her house and then photographs them.
“My favorite artist is Salzinger,” Adrian Acuna, a senior graphic design and photography major, stated. “I like how she made everything, the mounting and the lighting.”
The galleries will be open, free to both the public and students, until Oct. 31.
“It’s a great way for students to be exposed to not only award-winning artists but also to new things that are happening in the art community,” Pendakur added. “This is a wonderful way to begin the fall semester.”
