Student court settling SG election

This year’s official Student Government election timeline starts on Jan. 12, when students can turn in applications to run for office. Voting is on the timeline for Feb. 24 to 26, and “Unofficial” results are released the next day. But, as you’ve probably realized, that’s not where it ends. The last date on the timeline is “3/17 Onward.”

Clearly, we’ve reached “Onward.”

That’s because the elections process allows for election complaints and contestations — arguments from candidates about how their opponents broke the rules. These can be about anything from voter fraud to posters that were too big or left up for too long. (It’s usually the latter kind of thing.)

Those arguments are first heard and judged by the students who manage the election. If the candidates aren’t happy with the board’s decision, they can take their case to another group: the official judges of SG, the student court. That’s where we are at now in the process, with a hearing scheduled for 2 p.m. on March 20. Because of UP printing deadlines, we can’t publish what happened. But check the UP’s SG blog at owlwatch.wordpress.com to find out how — and when — this election wraps up.
