President Frank Brogan will launch Black History Month with an opening ceremony titled “Celebrating the Cultures of People of African Descent.” Lois Martin, an educator and community activist, will join him.
Afterward, enjoy soul food while roaming the tables of various cultural clubs, fraternities and sororities.

Singer and songwriter Rudy Currence, known for his song “Believe in Me” from The Bourne Identity, will entertain with R&B and gospel songs and will perform songs from his own albums.

The Great Debaters will be shown. This film, featuring Denzel Washington, is the true story of the 1935 debate team at Wiley College, an
all-black school.

Michael McCarty, an African storyteller, will give a lively presentation of African and African-American folk tales in what he titles “Have Mouth will Run it.” McCarty is the winner of the 2003 National Storytelling Networks Leadership and Service Award.

The Wiz — starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Richard Pryor — will be shown. This movie is a 1978 remake of The Wizard of Oz but set in a city where Dorothy is a kindergarten teacher from Harlem who gets lost in a snowstorm. To return home, she has to learn to rise above her background and the expectations of others.
