Beyond the Classroom: Letter from the Editor

Last semester was my most exhilarating semester yet at FAU. I went sailing on a Friday afternoon, I watched some guy climb a 45-foot wall, and I threw a Frisbee for the first time.

Then I met sophomore David Rundio, and I realized I was not taking advantage of what FAU had to offer. In fact, until I played Frisbee, I didn’t realize FAU even had on-campus clubs like the Ultimate Frisbee Club, the Climbing Club and two rugby clubs.

Rundio, a civil engineering major, is a member of five FAU sports clubs. He’s also taking five classes and is a resident assistant (RA) in Indian River Towers.
“You should have seen me in high school,” Rundio jokes about his involvement in extracurricular activities, adding that he was always involved in tons of clubs and loves to be around people.

Inspired by Rundio, I turned to the FAU Web site to find more clubs to get involved in. Twenty minutes later, I had found the list — which was incredibly difficult to locate — and decided that joining a club shouldn’t be this hard. Thus, the birth of this issue.

So if you want to join a sports club at FAU, I’ve done all the dirty work for you.

This issue gives you a behind-the-scenes look at six clubs, half of which I participated in myself. And if you don’t like these clubs, page 13 has a complete list of FAU’s registered and pending sports clubs and their contact information.

To get the full college experience, you have to do more than just go to class. I hope that at least one person will pick up this issue and decide that there’s more out there than grades.

If this issue helps you find a new club to get involved with, or you’ve got another cool club you’d like to promote, let us know — we’d love to hear from you.
