If you have any shaving cream, beef jerky or nail clippers around the house that you don’t use, you might want to think twice before throwing them away.
Give them some use and donate them to the Any Soldier campaign – a campaign that focuses on collecting various items for soldiers stationed in remote war zones.
“I donate as much as I can,” says Mike McGaffic, a freshman architecture major. “It’s a great cause and it’s not hard to contribute.”
The Any Soldier campaign started back in 2003, after a former sergeant had the idea to collect packages labeled Any Soldier for the troops that he was in charge of.
The Any Soldier campaign is being coordinated at FAU by the Weppner Center for Civic Engagement and Service and Students Advocating Volunteer Involvement (SAVI).
The sergeant was serving in a remote area where few packages ever came, which prompted the idea of this campaign: to deliver “any soldier” packages to those who don’t get much communication with their families.
Since the campaign began, it has received the attention of the entire nation, and is now a major national cause to care for. But this is the first year that FAU has gotten involved.
Monica Jara, assistant director of the Volunteer Center, explains that FAU got involved with the Any Soldier campaign because it seemed like the right thing to do for the soldiers at war.
“There are a lot of men and women overseas that are fighting for us,” says Jara. “And this campaign is just about lending a helping hand to them when they need us.”
The Any Soldier campaign is being sponsored at FAU by trustee Lalita Janke and will be collecting various items and letters from Monday, Aug. 11 until Friday, Sept. 26.
Collection boxes are set up on the second floor of the Breezeway in Room 207, and you can donate anything from sunscreen to rice cakes.
There are also several other collection boxes around all the other FAU campuses. See below for more collection sites.
“This is a great campaign to care for,” says freshman Brittany Curtis. “I used to donate things when I was in high school, and I will try to continue that here at FAU.”
