After two shots were fired off at FAU’s Student Appartments in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the shooter is still on the loose, according to FAU Police Chief Charles Lowe.
The campus is still on lockdown and will remain under surveillance until the suspect is either identified or placed far enough away from campus.
The Wednesday morning press conference began with FAU Police Chief Charles Lowe recapping the actions taken by FAU Police.
“At 1:16 a.m., a call was made from the Boca Raton Police due to gunshots being heard,” said Lowe. Once there, officers found two bullet shells on the floor. The shooting resulted from a fight during a student party. Due to an ongoing investigation, Lowe could not confirm the shooter.
Nearly 30 minutes later, at 1:45 a.m., the recently installed alarm system warned campus residents and demanded everyone stay indoors. When questioned if the 30-minute warning delay was too long, Brogan said, “It was a good amount of time.”
Whether the Person of Interest is still on campus or not, FAU will remain locked down until the shooter is apprehended or identified off campus grounds. The only people allowed to enter the campus are certain administration personnel.
Despite President Brogan’s claims that a non-student partier was shot in the arm, it was not confirmed if the student was hit by a bullet or hurt due to another injury. It is still unknown if anyone was shot. It is only certain that shots were fired from an unrecovered weapon.
Brogan said that all 2,400 students who live on campus will not be allowed to leave their dorms or FAU. He also promised food will be delivered to on-campus students, faculty and staff members.
Other than FAU, Palm Beach Community College, A.D. Henderson High School, and all other special events are cancelled for the Boca campus. Regardless of the suspect’s status, the main campus will remain closed all day with hopes of opening tomorrow. All other FAU campus remain open today.
