Baseball Earns Series Win over UL-L

On Sunday the Owls completed a weekend series with a 9-3 rout of the reigning Sun Belt champions, Ragin’ Cajuns of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The two teams split the first two games of the series, with each team winning easily.

The Owls moved to 10-6 (3-1 Sun Belt) with Sunday’s win. FAU has the second-best record in the conference.

The Owls were led by Tom Hatcher’s three hits, including a solo homer that gave FAU a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Jeremy Griffiths also came up big with two hits and two runs scored.

The game remained close until the 6th inning when the Ragin’ Cajuns gave up three consecutive base hits. That was the beginning of a one-inning onslaught that saw five hits and four runs scored for the Owls against three different pitchers for the Cajuns.

What had been a one-run game had now opened up to a 6-1 lead for the Owls.

The seventh inning wasn’t too much better for UL-L, as they gave up three more hits and three more runs, widening their deficit to 9-2.

The Cajuns (6-11, 1-5 Sun Belt) did manage to squeak in one run in during the eighth inning. However, it was too little, too late as freshman closer Glenn Troyanowski came in to preserve starter Michael Obradavich’s 9-3 victory. Mike Gipson came on in the 5th and kept the Cajuns hitless for four innings of relief.

The Owls’ high-powered offense easily exposed UL-L’s pitching.
