Edgar Allan Poe, master of the macabre and all things gothic, produced his masterpiece (arguably), The Raven, in 1845. Gothic-rock quintet The Horrors produced their first work – a six track EP entitled Stolen Transmission, and released it, rather fittingly, in October of 2006. Almost as if the EP embraced a life unto itself- much like the heart hidden below the floor that kept on beating in Poe’s “Tell-Tale Heart,”- Stolen Transmission began to pulsate and grow into a monster all on its own. The tracks that received the most buzz on the EP were “Sheena is a Parasite,” “Death at the Chapel” and “Jack the Ripper.” The guttural vocals and primal guitars mutated into a new gothic flavor of garage-punk that made fans and critics alike mad…in a good way.
With the success of Stolen Transmission, The Horrors have evolved from a cult following to a zombie-like frenzy, consisting of critics and smatterings of lugubrious legions. With great reviews and frenetically-frightening coverage from both Rolling Stone and Q magazine, The Horrors immediately began working on their first full length album entitled Strange House. At first glance, both the album and the band appear to be nothing more than a watered-down version of Marilyn Manson or the long lost offspring of Alice Cooper.
However, nothing could be further from the truth. Staying true to the sound and formula that garnered the group success from their EP, Stolen Transmission, Strange House features favorites like “Jack The Ripper,” and “Sheena is a Parasite,” but they also expound upon their sound with new tracks like “Count in Fives,” and “Horror’s Theme.”
Hailing from London and South East United Kingdom, The Horrors are not tormented souls nor are they merely cashing in on the ever-popular emo eyeliner. Rather, they’re musicians, comfortable with the fact that they have more in common with a very raw, alive and anything but undead sound, who cite their influences as Mr. Hyde, Rasputin and American serial killer, Carl Panzram. Whatever you do, don’t compare these lads to Marilyn Manson or Deadsy, as The Horrors are indeed horrifically original. The hottest tracks to look out for on MySpace and radio airplay everywhere are, “Jack the Ripper” and the new single, “Gloves.”
