With the next presidential election just 18 months away, the FAU Democrats are reuniting to show the presence of left-wing affiliates on the Boca Raton campus.
“We’re not the most prominent school in Florida and it seems like a lot of kids view it as a commuter school, so having a political group on campus would bring a new element to the spectrum and get students involved,” future president of the FAU Democrats on the Boca campus Jimmy Peluso says.
Peluso says students began losing interest in the college democrats due to “bad organization” and “poor communication.” Subsequently, the group disintegrated in 2005. Along with advisor Dr. Robert Watson and a core group of eager students, Peluso hopes to resurrect the FAU Democrats in time for fall 2007.
“It’s been in the works for the whole [spring] semester,” Peluso says. “Come fall, we will already have stuff set up to make a decent impact on campus.”
The first meeting on April 20, 2007, brought around 40 students who are serious about reassembling the college democrats. Through word of mouth and the impending surge of incoming freshmen, the membership is likely to grow in the upcoming semesters.
Although the name implies a party affiliation, the FAU Democrats plan to be more than just a political club. Their aim is to get students of all political ideologies involved in on-campus activities through the numerous events they have in the works.
“We need to make sure that there are always student activities on campus,” Peluso says. “I hope we will get a lot of attention — to be a force in a sense — and get some good events going.”
The FAU Democrats will have two meetings per month held on alternating days of the week. This will allow students who are not on the Boca campus every day to attend a meeting that fits in with their busy schedules. The dates of the upcoming meetings have not yet been solidified.
